Back up your photos, your presets, and your brushes

Every so often it is a good idea to refresh your computer. When I say refresh, I mean wipe the entire hard drive and put a fresh install of your OS and your essential programs.

When I migrated back over to Windows from Mac, it was a difficult choice to move from the Mac OS platform back to Windows, but based on some issues I was having with Apple PC's and considering that they would not stand behind the product, it became a no brainer pretty quick.

When I purchased my windows computer, there was no way I was going to screw around with a system that may or may not have the power to run some of the software, so I did by a surface unit. I in fact bought the surface laptop 3 which I have no regrets. Well at least until last week. I am sure it was my fault, but I lost my webcam, my sound card, and the system was having some problems starting. I had become so accustomed to the unit booting up in 3 to 5 seconds, that I guess it's safe to say, I was spoiled.

This all lead to me having to do a refresh on my system which was not working as I had hoped, and I made the decision to wipe it out and redo the OS.

When that did not go as expected, I had no choice but to reach out to Microsoft. This went very well, and after a few struggles I was able to create a USB drive image of my computer, and was able to boot the system up and make the repairs. TO be honest, its faster now that it was before.

With that said, I can not stress the importance of having at least on backup or external drive to save your Photo Cats to. I know some people have 3 or 4 backups but I think its a bit of overkill.

I know most don's do this, but it also needs to be understood that if buy presets, create your own, you really do need to back those up as well. Because of my workflow and the way I compose images, some of these presets save me a great deal of time in post, and although I don't have everything back in place, I am reserving myself to only install what I will use.

In summary, back it up. I would have been heartbroken if I would have lost and image like this.

I See YouI See YouA fox kit busts the photographer during observations Just want to put it out there and advise all on this.. This is a super high resolution photo and the file size is about 60 megs. The image itself was about 8400X6500 if I am correct. SO having to step this down to even upload, I had the cut the scale to 50 percent, so the file would be about 8 mb.

The biggest reason to back up. You will from time to time get someone who see's your image and wants a print right from the photographer, or you may want to print your own work and having the resolution associated with your image does in fact produce a better print. DO not limit yourself with all the options available today to save your photos and back up your programs.

My stance on this is pretty solid as I speak from experience. I would have lost several images years ago, if it had not been for my oldest and smartest friend. Although my PC crashed, he was able to recover so many images, that I still fine myself revisiting today.

That's is about it for today.

Back it up.

Thank you for the read, and if you have experienced a crash and lost data, I would like to hear your story.

As always my best to you and thank you for taking a minute to read the post.

Mike
